Commentary:

Face plant.

Perfect descriptive for what happened to bonehead republicans following Trump's orders to bring legal actions to the people who opposed him. "Backfire" is another.

I'm not a trial layer but I know one of the most important rules of conducting a cross examination of a witness is NEVER ALLOW A WITNESS TO INTRODUCE OR REINTRODUCE DAMNING EVIDENCE AGAINST YOUR CASE.

A good example of this is in the 1992 comedy My Cousin Vinny. A nitwit stuttering public defender "John Gibbons" tries to trip up a witness "Mr. Tipton". He gets him to admit he was 50 feet away from the crime scene and was not wearing his glasses at the time. Gibbons smiles as he asks if Tipton could make "a positive identification without his necessary prescription eyeglasses"... implying his vision was limited. Mr. Tipton calmly replies, "They're reading glasses", wore by many millions of people who see distances just fine. The classic move is when Gibbons turns to Tipton and says "no more questions".

A prosecutor who basically sets up a witness to build the opposing case is commonly referred to in legal circles as a "Stultus Ignarus" (roughly translated: "Ignorant Moron!")

This call back of Jack Smith gave him the loudest megaphone in our country this day. And Smith sang out like Andrea Bocelli...

By calling Smith back into the public eye 6 years after Trump was found guilty at such a pivotal time in the mid term election the Republicans basically said "Hey Jack.... come remind people how much of a criminal Trump is again!".
