The newly appointed board immediately elected Trump himself as the Kennedy Center Board Chair. Trump's first act was to try to rename the facility in his honor. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the board cannot install memorials or change the name of the building or grounds without explicit approval from Congress. He noted that the center's organic statute explicitly designates the facility as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, making any unilateral renaming by the board illegal.
