Las Vegas is experiencing a notable tourism losses during Donald Trump's second term referred to as the "Trump slump" driven by administration tariffs, high living costs, and a sharp drop in Canadian, Mexican and European visitors.
Stil MAGA "educated" supporters and the administration highlight cooling national inflation, job growth, and proposed tax policies on tips.
"Cooling Inflation". People are broke. They can't buy stuff. "Job Growth". Lots of medium and low paying employment. Good luck living on that! "Proposed Tax Free Tips". Trump promises that, who pays... THE CONSUMER. (See "Cooling Inflation")
During this mind-numbing hour and a half long blab buffet Trump, in between off-ramp gab about nothings, told Vegas crowd the economy "is the best ever". FTR The U.S. economy shows a mixed picture in August 2026, with a job loss of 23,000 positions in July and an unemployment rate dipping to 4.1% as workers leave the labor force. Economic growth has slowed to an annual rate of 1.5% in the second quarter, while inflation pressures and Middle East conflicts keep interest rates high, thus making purchasing homes and cars more expensive for consumers". (See "Cooling Inflation")
Mr. "Sin City" then told the small gathering of "patriots" to vote for someone who's not even running Nevada. He mistakenly pitched the crowd, “Vote for Michael Whatley.” He added, "Michael Whatley should be your governor". First off, Whatley is running for the SENATE in North Carolina, about 2,000 miles from Vegas and Whatley just came under fire for expressing his support for abolishing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). AT THE EXACT TIME TRUMP WAS PITCHING WHATLEY RECORD WILDFIRES WERE CONSUMING FORESTS IN THE NORTHWEST AND NEVADA! Now, that's effective presidenting!
Trump then did his Democrat-Dumocrat bit... Hardy frikkin Har Har.... I mean that brilliant piece of brain work is such a chart-topping, smash hit that crowd just couldn't get enough of it. Good thing he again told the crowd there's a "D" in DUMB. Wouldn't want them to misspell such a seminole presidential quip.
Lombardo is loving the MAGA Vegas Life. He's coordinating mining and high-tech ventures that will make Trump's financiers even richer. Giving them massive tax-breaks and granting them pristine dwindling water supplies from Lake Tahoe and the Sierra that will result in environmental drought. Animal protections are being replaced by Helicopter round-ups sending wild horses to slaughter!
You'd think at some point a good number of people in the audience would walk out... nope... guess these people were glued to their slot machines. Trump doesn't care about wildfires wiping out towns and the enviroment, why should they? "Viva Lost Wages"
As for the other 680,000 Las Vegas citizens I can tell you this. They don’t like reruns. The marquees on Las Vegas Boulevard have all gone digital because that town operates on a 24 hour clock. A performer is Tom Jones one minute and walking Barry Manilow's dog "Bagel" the next.
We'll see what Mr. "Excitement" gets in the way of Republican votes in less than 90 days. For now let's stick to the facts:
President Donald Trump's national approval rating averages between 35% and 39%, with disapproval sitting near 58% to 60%. These figures represent second-term low points, driven largely by public dissatisfaction over inflation, the cost of living, and the ongoing war in Iran.
In Las Vegas terms that's a "Taj Mahal" of a losing venture. It's the Fountainbleau and Cosmopolitan of presidential approval ratings.
The Fountainbleau 2000 on the north end of the Las Vegas Strip LOSS: $94 million. The Cosmopolitan 2008 in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip is a financial disaster. LOSS: $3.9 billion.
The Trump Taj Mahal cost roughly $1.1 to $1.2 billion to build in 1990. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy just a year later under a crushing wave of debt, resulting in bondholders and lenders losing upwards of $1 billion, hundreds of millions in unpaid contractor debts, and the eventual sale of the property for pennies on the dollar.
