Newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton, a British Journalist who formerly worked for Vanity Fair, a magazine known for being subjective and provocative and focused on being controversial to get attention. Bilton abruptly fired several 60 Minutes reporters under questionable circumstances.
60 Minutes executive producer, longtime correspondent Scott Pelley was terminated after a heated staff meeting where he reportedly criticized the direction CBS News was moving toward during Trump's second term. He's quoted saying CBS is "murdering" the show.
FACTS: Trump has significantly influenced the direction and operations of 60 Minutes, particularly following a $16 million lawsuit settlement with CBS and the network's subsequent change in corporate ownership under Billionaire Larry Ellison of Microsoft's son David Ellison. Ellison having sparse management and nearly no news background began to tear the network apart.
What did Trump sue CBS for? Well, he was unhappy with the way they edited an interview. You know he's ALWAYS unhappy when someone doesn't show him in positive light. This suit, combined with changes under Paramount's ownership, led to the resignation of veteran 60 Minutes executive producer Bill Owens and a wider restructuring of the show’s leadership.
Get it? Trump whined, pushed CBS CEO David Ellison to do whatever he wants. That's what people with little editorial experience do... they bend at the will of people with power. Some would say Ellison "lacks the ethics of news professionals and violated foundational standards for maintaining integrity, credibility, and public trust". But, who am I to make this claim... So let's rely on the viewpoint of newly unemployed Scott Pelley, a 30 year veteran news professional, a journalist who reported on battle fields, under fire in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. A person who said
“I have been in combat in Iraq. I have been in the war zone in Ukraine multiple times, risking my life and the happiness of my family because of my devotion to the broadcast.” Those are the words of someone with more credibility in his little toe than Trump has in his ballroom sized head.
Pelley says "(60 Minutes has) lost its DNA after its entire senior leadership and two of his on-air colleagues— Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega—were “cruelly fired without cause.” He alleges that the new management instructed him to “inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story,” That is a very dangerous order that ANY news professional should reject on merit.
Pelley called out CBS News and Paramount’s new leadership and accused them of harming the weekly news show’s reputation in a bid to curry favor with the Trump administration in a statement issued this past Wednesday. Hours after he was fired by the network for clashing with management.
