We were so close. Stay-home procedures slowed new cases to the point hospitals could cope. New cases began to hit the top of the curve and in many areas were sloping downward. If we continued for a couple more months we would have a trickle of illness... and by then hopefully effective treatments. A fraction of the final total of people would die by the time a vaccine would be developed. Still very bad, but a fraction.

But, no. Our country is doing exactly what it did in the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic.

People marched in the streets demanding "socialist" politicians who were "violating people's rights" by asking them to self-quarantine. Politicians buckled to the pressure.

20 million people died.

This is the week almost half the states open. Today Trump's administration rejected the official instructions from the C.D.C. on procedures to protect lives.

Look toward the last week of this month for massive casualties. This is not going to end well.
