One of the worst aircraft disasters happened 3.7 miles from the White House just a few days after trump took over the white house. An Army Blackhawk helicopter on a routine training flight entered the controlled flight path of a civilian plane. 64 people on the plane and 3 offices on the helicopter were killed instantly.
The rescue crews were still searching for survivors in the icy waters of the Potomac River and Trump was telling the nation what he thinks happened. He insinuated the crash had something to do with the ATC hiring people of diverse ethnicities and genders.
No FAA report. No investigative evidence. Trump tries to place blame on our military staff decisions?
Veterans lashed out in protest saying Trump's words were not only insulting to the millions of Men and Women in our military but also ignorant to the facts.
For our purposes we will stick to the facts:
DCA Reagan International airport is one of the busiest in the country. Thousands of flights enter, exit and cross the myriad of multi-level patterns of controlled airspace around the airport. For decades lawmakers have been warning about the overburdened ATC personel, the dangerous result of spending cuts and airport facilities that did not keep pace with it's growth.
Controllers at DCA Reagan Airport work in sync with a network of ground, tower, approach, departure, center, and other tracking agencies who are in a constantly changing swarm of flights. They not only have to take into consideration the civilian and military aircraft activity in the region, originating and flying into a web of other airports close by (including Dulles Airforce Base, Andrews Airforce Base, several executive airports)but they also have to keep a constant guard for aircraft threatening hundreds of high security government buildings.
The crash occured at night. Approximately 9 out of 10 aircraft accidents occur at night or in inclement weather. The accident happed at a peak time of arrivals and departures from the DC area.
Reports from the FAA state concerns with understaffing at DCA. Staffing in the air traffic control tower was reported to be "not normal" at time of the midair collision. "The position configuration was not normal for the time of day and volume of traffic," according to the report obtained Thursday by The Associated Press. Staff complaints include being overworked, understaffed and posing potential dangers to aircraft.
NOTE: THIS PAST WEEK AMONG TRUMP'S HUNDREDS OF ORDERS HE CALLS FOR REDUCTIONS IN GOVERNMENT SPENDING. We can all guess how that will impact vital necessities like the ATC system.
Finally, no matter how much training and real world experience pilots get over years, decades the human brain is incapable of being infallible. Those who know the intricacies of flying know how many different challenges are involved. This is especially true concerning helicopters. Pilots describe it as "balancing on top of two large balls on top of each other". It's probable the crew of the Blackhawk were focused on their intruments and relying too much on the ATC.
It's too early to know what happened this time but with such a loss of life we can surely say we don't need a half-cocked president placing blame before facts.
